Gerdau is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer I for its Petersburg, VA facility.

NATURE AND SCOPE:
This position is primarily responsible for developing, refining, and communicating the strategies and engineering information needed to optimize productivity and capital projects while ensuring the efficient and cost effective production of the final product. The Engineer I shall prepare and/or review all data sheets, diagrams, and flow charts needed for the correct and efficient development of project, capital, and expense plans in order to develop and run capital projects. This will include the need to work in close cooperation with department supervisors and appropriate engineering, maintenance, and operations team members to ensure correct and proper selection, installation, and operation of all related equipment to obtain the desired production, safety, and quality levels as needed. The Engineer I is responsible for developing engineering information to facilitate departmental requests and needs for cost justification.

DIMENSIONS:
This position serves in an advisory or consulting capacity having no direct reports, rather serves as a coach to all levels of employees, contractors and plan management. This position has direct responsibility for specific projects with low risk and values under $200,000.

Responsibilities:
The Engineer I will provide technical coordination and support in the operating and capital expense management processes by initiating and running projects using the capital expense (CAPEX) project process, equipment monitoring, stabilization, and improvements through:

Develop and refine engineering procedures.
Process sample and data collection and interpretation.
Implement new technology.
Train and develop technical operations
Conduct Technical Studies to support CAPEX investments.
Implement Best Practices.
Support process improvement projects where applicable.
Participate in the development of Annual Action Plans.
Participate in Technical Committee benchmark.

The Mechanical Engineer I will assist in the preparation and completion of AutoCAD drawings for additions, installations, and maintenance/repair purposes. This job is responsible for preparing drawings and sketches for modifications of machinery and equipment, and layouts on various systems. The Engineer I will assist in checking and verifying specifications and drawings for accuracy on large projects that require design drawings needed in constructing the facility. Must stay abreast of current technologies in order to identify and work to resolve areas where improvement is needed. The Engineer I must be able to work independently as well in a team environment on process, capital, and equipment related projects for their assigned projects.

The Mechanical Engineer I must perform the above mentioned duties and responsibilities in accordance with all Federal, State, and Local environmental regulations. Employees must also report any situation which may have a detrimental impact to human health or the environment to their immediate supervisor.

KEY JOB DUTIES:
Collect, correlate, and report operational information/data for their assigned projects.
Prepare data sheets, diagrams, flow charts, and technical studies (including project budgets, schedules, risks, and benefits analysis) for correct and efficient installation and operation of the equipment.
Provide preliminary engineering services for department projects and cost justification.
Review, develop, and improve operation procedures and train personnel in operations improvements.
Assist in solving production anomalies in the operations process.
Assist with and participate in improvement activities
Facilitate training sessions for all employees on the Engineering policies, practices and processes.
Assist with the development of the Annual Action Plan.


Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Engineering; Mechanical Engineering degree preferred.
Up to 2 years of industrial experience. Heavy industry and / or manufacturing experience a plus.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and AutoCAD. Experience with SAP, EPM or Microsoft Project is a plus.
Basic knowledge of engineering and construction techniques used in designing and constructing projects. Must be able to apply engineering fundamentals to the continuous improvement efforts of CAPEX and maximize the efficiency of the overall department operation.
Excellent communication & presentation skills, have the ability to articulate ideas, be detail oriented, and comfortable dealing with associates at all levels within the organization.
